EUMM Head of Mission Hansjörg Haber: “I welcome the very positive start of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism meetings in Gali”

15.07.2009

The first meeting of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) in the Abkhaz theatre took place on 14 July in Gali. Under the auspices of the United Nations (UN), it brought together participants from the Georgian, Russian and Abkhaz sides and representatives of the UN and the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM).

After the meeting the participants commended the “constructive atmosphere”. It was possible during this meeting to agree important procedural questions concerning the frequency of future IPRM meetings, their format, the working language, the chairmanship of the next meetings and the practical set up of a “hot-line”.

The Head of the EUMM Ambassador Hansjörg Haber expressed his satisfaction with the results of this IPRM meeting:

“This meeting in Gali has proved that with the necessary good-will and constructive attitude of all participants it is possible to bring about results. This was a very positive start for these Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism meetings. We hope that this positive spirit will also continue when we start discussing issues of substance in future meetings.”

The next IPRM meeting will take place in two weeks time on 28 July also in Gali. All participants hope that these meetings will contribute to strengthening security and stability in the areas along the Abkhaz administrative boundary line.
