EUMM awards Human Rights and Peace Prize at the Tbilisi Film Festival

07.12.2009

As International Human Rights Day on 10 December draws near, the European Union Monitoring Mission was proud to instigate a special Human Rights and Peace Award at the 10th edition of the Tbilisi Film Festival. A panel of international and Georgian representatives considered 10 films selected for this category by the Director of the Film Festival.

After a lively debate, the panel decided to award the first prize and therefore the “EUMM Human Rights and Peace Prize” to the Armenian Film Director Harutyun Khachatryan for his movie “Border”. The Deputy Head of the EUMM, General Gilles Janvier, announced the winner at the closing ceremony of the Film Festival at the Amirani Cinema on Sunday 6 December.

The film is a strongly symbolic story touching upon topical issues such as the freedom of movement across borders and the right to life. It was chosen as it raised significant issues entwined with the principle of fundamental human rights. The EUMM will be showing this film on Human Rights Day to a group of law students from Tbilisi State University, after which there will be a lively discussion about the issues it raises. Our Field Offices in Mtskheta, Gori and Zugdidi will also be organising a range of Human Rights related events in coming days, including school presentations, discussions, forums and competitions.

The EUMM was honoured to be able to participate in the Tbilisi Film Festival, a successful cultural and artistic initiative. We hope that the key issue of human rights will be able to be featured in future such events.
