EUMM invites to the celebration of Europe Day

09.05.2010

9th of May is celebrated by all European nations as Europe Day. This year, a wide variety of events will be organised across Europe in order to mark the 60th anniversary of the ‘Schuman declaration’, which is considered as the commencement of what is now the European Union.

With a vast range of activities, the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia invited the local population to a country-wide celebration of the EU Day.

In the past week, a EUMM Bus travelled across Georgia visiting several villages and towns. In Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, the bus visited Dusheti and Mukhrani villages. It then travelled to Shida Kartli and Mereti regions where it stopped in Tkviavi, Gori town and Sachkhere. Then the bus continued to Samegrelo – Zemo Svaneti region and visited Khaishi and Senaki.   Throughout the week, town hall meetings, concerts, pantomime theatres, sport games, as well as EU knowledge based competitions were organised in the centre of various towns as well as in primary and secondary schools. All these meetings were a good opportunity to get to know each other and share knowledge about the European Union as well as the role and mandate of the EUMM in Georgia. The whole EUMM Bus tour has been filmed and the video can be found under the following the address: www.eumm.eu/en/press_and_public_information/videos

Europe Day was also marked by EUMM in the IDP settlement of Tsilkani, where school students participated in a graffiti workshop on 6 May.

Furthermore, on Sunday 9 May, Field Office Zugdidi will welcome everyone in the town of Zugdidi to participate in games, quizzes, art performances and other activities.

The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia is also participating in the EU Open Day Exhibition in Brussels on 8 May, where the Mission’s work in Georgia will be presented.
