CIVCOM delegates from Brussels visit EUMM

29.06.2012
Delegates from EU Member States represented at the Committee for Civilian Aspects of Crisis Management, (CivCom) based in Brussels, together with a representative from the European Commission, visited the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia on 28-29 June.

The committee provides advice in the field of civilian crisis management to the Political and Security Committee (PSC) under the European Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). CivCom last visited EUMM two years ago. CivCom field trips to Missions take place on a regular basis, and are an opportunity for delegates to interact and exchange views with various local actors and civil society representatives.

The visitors were welcomed by the Head of Mission, Ambassador Tyszkiewicz. He emphasised the important role that the Mission plays on the ground in maintaining stability and building confidence amongst the conflict parties.

He passed on the message that the visit was a clear signal that EUMM remains very high on the EU Member States’ agenda. The visit is also a strong message of the continuous commitment of the EUMM together with all other EU actors towards supporting a peaceful process of the conflict.

During their stay in Georgia, the CivCom delegates visited the EUMM Field Office Gori and went out on patrols to see for themselves the situation along the Administrative Boundary Line. They had the opportunity to discuss progress towards the delivery of the Mission’s mandate. CivCom delegates also met with Georgian Government and civil society representatives. Moreover, the delegates had a useful exchange of views with the Head of the EU Delegation, the EU Special Representative’s office, the UN Special Representative’s office, as well as the UNDP and the UNHCR .

Also on 28 June, the EUMM HQ was visited by the former Head of the Mission, now Civilian Operations Commander and Director of the Civilian Planning and Conduct Capability (CPCC) Mr Hansjoerg Haber, who is in Georgia to meet with different local, European, and international counterparts.
