President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso visits EUMM Field Office Mtskheta

On Friday, 13 June, José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, shortly visited EUMMs Field Office in Mtskheta within the framework of his one-day visit to Georgia. He handed over Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) medals and certificates to EUMM Mission members.
President Barroso was warmly welcomed by Head of Mission Toivo Klaar and Field Office Chief Matt Whatley. He received an informative briefing on the mandate, as well as on the Missions current activities, progress and challenges.

EUMMs Head of Mission thanked President Barroso for his visit and offered him with a book of photographs depicting “Life along the line” by  EU Monitor Ray Cooper.
The President awarded 12 international staff members with CDSP medals and handed over certificates of recognition to four national staff members.

“My visit comes, as we prepare for much closer integration between Georgia and European Union,"- said President Barroso . "On the 27-th of this month in the context of the next EU summit we will sign in Brussels the EU-Georgia Association Agreement.  Every day you make a vital contribution to making this happen by working for stability in Georgia. Your role in confidence-building and engagement is a key in the current context."

- the President continued . "EU and, of course, this Mission depend on your daily commitment and enduring professionalism.  

It is, therefore, a great pleasure for me to be allowed to hand over to you these medals and certificated. Well done! Thank you! Keep up the good work!”


Following
the ceremony President Barroso shook hands with the Mission members and briefly conversed with them about their daily work.
