Go Group Media is hosting a cross-boundary workshop gathering young journalists from across the South Caucasus in London from 12 to 14 December.
Ten journalists from various regions, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia, have been selected to participate. The workshop is part of Go Group Media’s Caucasus Authors Course (CAC School) and is funded by the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia.
“This three-day workshop aims to raise young journalists’ awareness about conflict-sensitive reporting whilst contributing to the establishment of a sustainable cross-boundary network of journalists,” explains Ann Vaessen, EUMM’s Spokesperson and Chief of Press and Public Information. “Journalists play a crucial role when it comes to building confidence between conflict-affected communities. With this workshop, we hope to empower journalists to appease tensions rather than maintain them and bringi communities together rather than keep them divided. In other words, we invite journalists to look at conflict-related issues from a wider perspective.”
“The workshop is a continuation of Go Group Media’s long-running effort to bring up a new elite of journalists and editors,” says Margarita Akhvlediani , Head of Go Group Media and one of the workshop’s three trainers. “We see the selected participants as those who will be shaping the content of media in the South Caucasus in several years’ time, and it is on their choices as journalists that the future of the region’s conflicts will largely depend.”
Specifically, the workshop’s training objectives are:
To enhance the journalists’ understanding of and ability to analyse the conflicts in the South Caucasus;
To improve their capacity to report in a well-researched, factual and non-biased way which contributes to peace, rather than fuels conflict;
To help them understand and report about the European Union’s policy in the region;
To make them aware about the EU Prize for
Journalism and the EU Special Prize for Peace Journalism:
To contribute to the establishment of a sustainable cross-boundary network allowing for a smooth exchange of information, material (photos, videos, sound bites, statements) and tips.
Go Group Media’s CAC School is a media education enhancement programme bringing together young reporters from across the conflict-ridden South Caucasus region to introduce them to the main theoretical concepts and applied research skills in the field of conflict resolution whilst providing them with advanced practical knowledge of documentary filmmaking, photography and investigative reporting.
To date, CAC School has produced two batches of students (in 2012 and 2013, respectively), and is now going through its third round, attending to a new group of young media practitioners.
