EUMM takes action for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence!

27.11.2015
EUMM staff is taking action in support of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence! Why the orange hand prints? As a bright and optimistic colour, orange represents a future free from violence against women and girls, for the United Nations UNiTE Campaign. Staff also reflected on what gender equality means to them.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign lasts 16 days ending on 10 December (Human Rights Day), underpinning the simple fact that violence against women and girls remains the single most pervasive human rights violation today. According to the United Nations, 1 in 2 women killed worldwide were killed by their partners or families. Gender based violence affects everyone; women, men, boys and girls – and it could be prevented!

This year, EUMM is once again taking action to support this global effort by undertaking and supporting activities carried out at a grass-roots level with a view to granting local actors increased visibility, empowering them and making their initiatives more sustainable.

Furthermore this year, EUMM will conduct a ‘White Ribbon’ campaign and throughout the 16 Days of Activism – EUMM monitors and staff members will wear ‘white ribbons’ signifying a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. When going on patrol in villages along the ABLs, EU monitors will distribute ‘white ribbons’ to community members and discuss the campaign.

Join the 16 Days of Activism Campaign and say NO to violence against women and girls. Wear a white ribbon and spread the word. Together we can multiply the effects and push for change together.
