EU’s Principal Advisor on Gender visited the EUMM

Today, the European External Action Service’ Principal Advisor on Gender, and on the implementation on UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, Ambassador Mara Marinaki, visited the EUMM, as part of her visit to Georgia.

The Head of Mission, Kęstutis Jankauskas, welcomed Ambassador Marinaki to the Mission and joined her for a meeting with the State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality of Georgia, Ketevan Tsikhelashvili.

The visit continued to the Mission’s Field Office in Mtskheta, where Ambassador Marinaki was briefed by the Head of Mission, Chief of Field Office Metskheta, Georgios Papaioannou and the Mission’s Gender Adviser Stacy Ziebell.

Ambassador Marinaki also met, and extensively discussed Gender issues and aspects, with the Mission’s Gender Advisor, Stacy Ziebell and the Gender Focal Points from the Mission’s three Field Offices.

From the Field Office, the group continued to the Internally Displaced Person’s settlement in Tserovani where the Ambassador met with conflict affected women and civil society representatives to discuss the difficulties, which women face in the settlement. Later Ambassador Marinaki met with the Gamgebeli (Mayor) of Tserovani, Nuzgar Tinikashvili.

The Principal Advisor on Gender thanked the Mission and its members for its work and accomplishments in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment and encouraged this work to be continued. 

The Principal Advisor on Gender, Ambassador Mara Marinaki of Greece was appointed in September 2015 by the EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini. She is the first-ever European External Action Service Principal Advisor on Gender, and on the implementation on UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. Her key priorities include the promotion of all issues pertaining to the role of Gender, Womens Empowerment and to strengthening the equitable and inclusive participation of women and girls in their societies, throughout entire Georgia.
