The Deputy Head of the EU Monitoring Mission briefed students from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Germany

28.09.2018

On 26 September, the Deputy Head of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia, Ms. Kate Fearon, welcomed a group of students from the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation. Professor Burkard Steppacher accompanied the students.

Ms. Fearon gave a general overview of the present mandate, operations and activities of the EUMM, stressing EUMM’s significant contribution to managed stability on the ground and confidence building along the Administrative Boundary Lines. She highlighted the important role of the Mission facilitated Hotline and the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) meetings. The Deputy Head of Mission also stressed that the IPRM meetings facilitated communications between all the parties to the conflict and contributed to maintaining security on the ground. Within this context, the importance of the Geneva International Discussions, as the only international format of dialogue between the parties, was also underlined.

Q&A followed the briefing and students expressed great interest in the overall situation on the ground and the Mission’s perspective on present and future developments at the Administrative Boundary Lines.

The visit was held in the framework of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Talent Programme.
