EUMM STRENGTHENS CONTACTS WITH THE LOCAL POPULATION

15.03.2009

Together with its regular patrols in the vicinity of the Administrative Boundary Lines, the European Union Monitoring Mission is also conducting foot patrols in towns and villages across Georgia. This allows the monitors to closely interact with the local population and to explain the Mission’s role and mandate. It is also an opportunity for EUMM staff to get a better understanding of the views and concerns of the local people.

So far, nearly 10,000 leaflets (in Georgian, Russian and English) explaining the Mission’s mandate have been distributed to schools and local communities as part of the Mission’s public outreach campaign. Our monitors have been well received by the local population who are interested in finding out more about the Mission’s activities on the ground.

In the coming weeks, the EUMM Field Offices will be engaged in conducting further events and activities related to Europe Day which will be celebrated on 9 May.
