Within its normalization work, the European Union Monitoring Mission is focusing on gender issues through a series of tailored actions and activities aimed at disseminating information related to the rights of women and to the existing assistance mechanisms.
The August conflict, the living conditions in IDP settlements, sexual and gender -based violence, as well as human trafficking especially in the coastal areas of Georgia, in many cases specifically affect women and raise concerns which need to be addressed through gender mainstreaming and gender awareness raising activities.
With its strong field presence and regular contact with the population also in small villages and remote areas, EUMM intends to play an essential role in gathering information on specific cases and trends which will be referred to relevant national and international agencies as well as to local authorities. This is expected to create more efficient and reliable referral mechanisms and to improve the information flow both between relevant agencies and between the agencies and the local population.
