RECENT MARITIME INCIDENTS AND ACCESS TO EDUCATION OF GEORGIAN PUPILS LIVING IN THE GALI DISTRICT DISCUSSED AT FOURTH INCIDENT PREVENTION MECHANISM MEETING

On 8 September in Gali, Georgian, Abkhaz, Russian and EUMM representatives attended the fourth Incident Prevention Mechanism meeting conducted under the auspices of the UN. Recent maritime incidents in the Black Sea as well as the access to education of Georgian pupils living in Gali were amongst the main issues discussed.

Notwithstanding different views particularly regarding the legal implications of the recent incidents in the Black Sea, participants all agreed that any incidents with potential security implications shall be avoided and that the population should be duly informed about any applicable measures concerning access to schools in Georgia of Georgian pupils living in Gali.

A range of other specific issues was discussed and it was agreed that a review of past incidents would be introduced as a standing issue on the agenda.

The next meeting is scheduled to take place in Gali on 22 September.
