EUMM celebrates women’s day by events and concerts

01.03.2012
International Women’s Day, 8 March is commemorated across the European Union and is designated in many countries, like in Georgia, as a national holiday.

International Women’s Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old strive of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.
It’s a day when women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to not only to look back to a tradition that represents at least ten decades of strive for equality, justice, peace and development but also to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women.
The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia marks the International Women’s Day to recognize that peace and social progress require active participation and equality by both women and men, and to acknowledge the contribution of women to international peace and security.

This year EUMM celebrates the occasion with the theme “ Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures”.

These events involve young women in some way so that thousands of minds will be inspired to discover and use the best of their potentials and to develop life skills – in negotiation, leadership, conflict resolution, critical thinking, decision making and communication.

EUMM Field Offices in Zugdidi, Gori and Mtskheta are organizing many different events related to the International Women’s Day. The main event for all Field Offices is the concert tour of three well-known Georgian girl bands: Candy that won the 2011 Junior Eurovision, Mari Dari and Bzikebi that also successfully participated.

During the concerts the singers also take the opportunity to have a discussion with the audience about their way to success.
