Patrolling in Oni

25.09.2012
EUMM Field Office Gori patrols time to time around Oni, the most remote part of the field offices’ area of responsibility. Oni is the main town of the mountainous Racha region, where the Administrative Boundary Line to South Ossetia is accessible only during the summer. During the latest patrol to the area the monitoring team approached the region close to Mamisoni Pass, which marks both the Administrative Boundary Line to South Ossetia and the state border between Georgia and Russia. After making a long and difficult ride the patrol reached the destination situated more than 2,500 metres above sea level. The next day the monitors visited the villages of Iri and Tsedisi to observe the Administrative Boundary Line south of the Mamisoni Pass. They also talked to the local population to explain the role and activities of the Mission. Having completed the patrol the monitors submitted their report that will finally inform EU policy makers about the situation on the ground. All EUMM activities aim at pursuing stabilisation, normalisation and confidence-building, as stipulated in its mandate.
