The EU Monitoring Mission welcomes the
release this week by the Georgian Government of 6 detainees, four South
Ossetian residents and two Russian citizens. This is an important step
in resetting the overall detainee issue.
In order to de-escalate the situation on the ground and contribute to raising the confidence of the population living along the administrative boundary lines, the EUMM calls upon the de facto South Ossetian authorities to take similar action.
It is also hoped that in future, such cases are dealt with through administrative rather than judicial systems. The right forum to take these issues forward is the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism. The EUMM calls upon the de facto South Ossetian authorities to re-engage in the IPRM process.
