This morning an improvised explosive device went off in Dvani, close to the South Ossetian administrative boundary line. Two Georgian police officers were killed, three were injured. Moreover, the explosion reportedly was accompanied by gunfire. A patrol of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) has been on the spot to verify the situation.
The Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission, Ambassador Hansjörg Haber, strongly condemned this attack:
“We are very concerned to learn about today's attack in Dvani that killed two Georgian police officers and injured three. We send our condolences to their families and hope that the injured policemen get well soon.
This attack by an improvised explosive device is an unacceptable breach of the Sarkozy-Medvedev-Agreement. It has to be thoroughly investigated on both sides and the authors duly prosecuted.
All parties to the August conflict clearly committed themselves to end all hostilities. Today's attack risks escalating the still tense situation along the administrative boundary lines. We repeat our call on all sides to prevent further provocations.”
