On 8 October, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and an accompanying delegation joined a European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) patrol to the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) with South Ossetia.
The Presidential delegation was welcomed by EUMM Head of Operations, Mr. Ville Siikasalmi, who introduced the visitors to the mandate, role and activities of EUMM Georgia. President Steinmeier was also briefed on recent developments at the ABL by monitors from Field Office Mtskheta. The President concluded his visit by meeting some of the German experts currently seconded to the Mission.
The Federal President emphasised Germany’s firm and continued commitment to EUMM Georgia as the only international monitoring presence on the ground. He praised the role of the Mission in contributing to stability and confidence-building in Georgia and in the wider region.
