The Head of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), Ambassador Marek Szczygieł, met with the Chairperson of the Parliament, Mr Archil Talakvadze, on 21 July 2020. Mr Talakvadze warmly welcomed the Head of Mission and expressed confidence that the cordial relationship would be continued and further developed under his leadership.
During the meeting, the Head of Mission underscored that EUMM had maintained its monitoring capacity on the ground during the COVID-19 crisis. He also expressed concern over the prolonged suspension of the Geneva International Discussions and the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) meetings and stressed the need for a swift resumption of these dialogue platforms. Ambassador Szczygieł also highlighted the work of the Mission-managed Hotline in exchanging information and defusing tensions.
Mr Talakvadze underlined the important role of the Mission as the only international monitoring presence in maintaining stability on the ground and contributing to cross-ABL confidence building. He also noted the importance of the Mission in providing objective information on the situation on the ground and raised a number of points regarding the security situation along the Administrative Boundary Lines.
