The Head of the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM), Ambassador Marek Szczygieł , met with the new State Minister for Reconciliation and Civic Equality (SMR), Tea Akhvlediani.
The Head of Mission congratulated Ms Akhvlediani on her appointment and expressed appreciation for the positive work relations between her office and the Mission.
The Head of Mission and State Minister Akhvlediani welcomed the
recent relaunch of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) for
the South Ossetian theatre in Ergneti and expressed hope for the resumption of the
Gali IPRM for the Abkhaz theatre. They discussed also the situation of the
conflict-affected population, including the prolonged closure of controlled
crossings points, recent detention cases and matters pertaining to so called ‘borderisation’
along the ABL. Both underlined the importance of the EUMM-managed Hotline,
which is frequently activated to facilitate medical crossings across the
Administrative Boundary Lines (ABLs), and serves as a crucial tool for
cross-ABL confidence building.
During the meeting, the Head of Mission explained that EUMM had maintained its presence and monitoring capacity on the ground during the COVID-19 pandemic. The State Minister outlined her priorities and provided an update on the confidence-building initiative ‘A Step to a Better Future’.
