Tbilisi, 23 March 2021— The 2020 EUMM Special Prize for Peace Journalism was awarded today to Ketevan Magradze from Pankisi Community Radio for her piece, “Buznege, Salam, Dzabakhum –Three Days in Captivity in Tskhinvali.”
The prize will give Ms. Magradze the opportunity to participate in a one-month fellowship at the Headquarters of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, in London.
“Independent, conflict-sensitive journalism is essential to build confidence and lasting peace. This is why EUMM is really honoured to reward some of the best journalistic pieces in that field in Georgia every year,” commented EUMM’s Head of Mission, Ambassador Marek Szczygieł. “Media plays a key role in building strong, healthy and peaceful democracies, and it is encouraging to witness their commitment.”
Every year since 2013, the EUMM Special Prize for Peace Journalism rewards ethical, independent and conflict-sensitive journalism. This contributes to confidence-building among communities, one of the priorities of the Mission in line with its Mandate.
In 2020, 44 journalists entered the competition for the EUMM Special Prize. In addition to the winner, the following journalists each received an honourable mention:
- Giorgi Chagelishvili from Georgian Public Broadcaster for “Dividing Lines”
- Nino Lomadze from Indigo for “Revive the Memory”
- Maia Pipia from Radio Atinati for “London-Calcutta: Traces of Indo-European Telegraph in Sukhumi and Zugdidi”.
The EUMM Special Prize for Peace Journalism constitutes one of the seven categories of the EU Prize for Journalism, which the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia organises annually. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Award Ceremony was held in a digital format.
The EUMM-sponsored prize was organised in partnership with the London-based Institute for War and Peace Reporting.
