Tbilisi, 3 February 2022 - Estonian Member of the European Parliament and Rapporteur for Georgia Sven Mikser visited today parts of the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) with South Ossetia with the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM).
EUMM Head of Mission, Ambassador Marek Szczygieł, who joined MEP Mikser throughout his field visit, briefed him on the latest security and humanitarian developments in the Khurvaleti area.
In the divided village of Didi Khurvaleti, he explained how ongoing ‘borderisation’ activities and features, such as fences and a watchtower, negatively affect conflict-affected communities living on both sides of the ABL in their daily lives. The briefing focused on the restrictions that ‘borderisation’ cause to the freedom of movement of the local population and their concrete, daily consequences, including for instance, when they cannot cross the ABL to collect their pension benefits.
At the end of the visit, MEP Mikser thanked the Mission for its contribution to stability as the only international monitoring presence on the ground.
